Thank you so much for taking time to listen to this podcast!

In today’s podcast I am going to share with you my tips on how to use Instagram to market your restaurant.

Today is Monday the 12th of February 2018 and here in Manchester we have snow. But the sun is shining and it’s just beautiful.

Before, I start with the tips on how to market your restaurant business on Instagram let me share some Instagram statistics. Which will demonstrate the importance of this platform to your business.

Instagram is actually owned by Facebook.

The platform has over 800 million active users with over 500 million daily active users.

It’s also surprising to see that 75% of Instagram users are outside of the USA.

In the UK alone Instagram attracts over 21 million active users.

In Manchester alone you can target around 700,000 users on Instagram.

If you would need more information on your local potential audience reach please contact me directly on 0161 505 0570 and I would be happy to research this for you.

Now, the big question is how do you market your restaurant to your local audience?

So, let’s start with:

Tip Number 1:

Instagram has always been a visual platform. Therefore,in order to stand out from your competitors you really need to learn the art of photography. If you are serious about growing your Instagram followers then you really have to invest in a decent camera. I personally would recommend you look at the Canon 5d Mark III. This is the camera I personally use and I don’t know where I would be without it.

On the other hand if you are on the tight budget then you can get away with a good quality phone camera such as Samsung S8 or the latest Iphone. However, if you do go down this road then you will need to learn how to make the most out of the natural light.

When it comes to taking photos it’s important to create a mix. Don’t just post photos of your food but try think outside the box.

Tip Number 2:

In tip 1 I mentioned that Instagram is a visual platform. But this does not mean you just have to focus on photography. In fact today Video is gaining momentum day by day. For this reason, you will also need to introduce video to your Instagram marketing campaigns.

But where do you start with Video?

In fact it’s not that complex. If you decide to invest in a good DSLR camera such as the Canon 5d Mark III then you can also use it for Video. The same applies to the smartphones I mentioned earlier.

In terms of content you can demonstrate to your audience various actives within your restaurant. For example what goes into your cocktails, how to make a cocktail, you can showcase your restaurant, you can record your chefs preparing your weekly specials and the list goes on.

Tip Number 3:

In this tip I want to stress the importance of using correct #hashtags. Unlike Facebook, Instagram thrives on hashtags. So, it’s important to use the correct ones for your audience.

For example in Manchester you can target:

#manchester
#manchefs
#manchesterfood
#manchesterfoodie
#manchesterfoodgram

and the list goes on.

I should point out that you should be using different #hashtags for different posts. The aim is to test and figure out which ones work the best for you. As well as this you are expanding your audience reach.

Tip Number 4:

I am going to stay with #hashtags. But in this tips I would like to suggest you create your own #hashtag. For example you can create a #yourrestaurantname.

The aim of your own #hashtag is to encourage your customers to engage with you on your social media platforms.

The best way to promote your dedicated #hashtag is design table cards and place them on each table in your restaurant. This will encourage your customers to take selfies and in return link them to your #hashtag.

This is a awesome tip which is still underused and therefore you will have plenty of room to set your mark.

Tip Number 5:

In this final tip I would like to share with you something really unique. In tip 2 I talked about using video to market your restaurant on Instagram. However, I have not mentioned using your customers as your ambassadors in your videos. This is the future of testimonials and the one which is so rare in the restaurant industry.

Online reviews are becoming so important to success of any business. However, majority of the reviews are text based and can also be manipulated. Therefore, they don’t always carry the weight they should.

However, video testimonials done inside your restaurant will have a profound impact. Also, you will find that most of your customers will want to take part in your video testimonials. In today’s world we all want to be part of the social media craze.

In order to get the best results, I suggest you set aside one day every 3 months to collect as many video testimonials as possible. Again you can use table cards to promote this to your customers without being to pushy. Let them come to you and ask to be on your video testimonial. In return you can offer a free drink or a small discount on their next visit.

You will be surprised how many offers you will get.

When you video testimonials are published make sure you tag your customers into the post. This will result in extra shares and more visibility.

Let’s do a quick re-cap of what you have learnt today:

Instagram is a very popular platform with over 700,000 users just in Manchester. Instagram is a visual platform which makes it ideal for you to showcase your food, your restaurants interior and your customer testimonials.

Before, I close today’s podcast I want to encourage you take your marketing seriously as of today. Don’t wait until your turnovers start to drop off! It’s much easier to fix problems when you are cash rich than when things start to tumble. This is the biggest problem I see with many restaurant owners who contact me.

Please, Please don’t get into that situation.

If you don’t have the time or the knowledge to carry out your own digital marketing then please ring me on: 0161 505 0570 and I would be happy to help.

Opening a restaurant is the easy part. But keeping the restaurant thriving from year to year is the hard part. So, invest time and effort into marketing your restaurant. It will pay off in the long run.
