Welcome to the fourteenth episode of Grow Your Business Podcast brought to you by Manchester based WebProjectUK.com.

In this podcast you are going to learn the why social media is important to success of your restaurant business.

In the recent podcasts I have talked a lot the about benefits of social media marketing. The main reason behind this is because, social media marketing does work if used correctly.

Before, I get deeper into this topic let me share with you some very important social media statistics.

First, let’s go over the most important social media platforms.

The data is provided by Social-Media.co.uk and is based around the UK users.

The number one social media platform in the UK is Facebook which has over 32 million users. In the second place we have Twitter with 20 million UK users. Followed closely by YouTube and LinkedIn with 19 million UK users. In the 5th place we have Instagram with 14 million users and growing day by day.

I have only quoted the top 5 social media platforms. However, you can also make use of Google +, Pinterest, Snapchat, Tumblr, Reddit, Foursquare and the list goes on and on.

Depending on your resources you can go and target all of the social media platforms or just focus on the top 5. My advice is to target one social media platform at the time. I say this because you need to understand how to use each social media platform before moving onto the next one.

If you target all the platforms at the same time you might find that you don’t have the time to really understand each platform in detail. Therefore, you will not see the results you desire.

With that out of the way let’s look at the reasons why you need to use Social Media marketing to keep your restaurant business moving forward.

I know most restaurant owners focus on providing exceptional customer service and food which is out of this world. With this you will attract word of mouth marketing and this is the best form of marketing.

But you can’t just focus on one method of marketing if you want your restaurant business to stay profitable year after year. All successful businesses focus on a range of different marketing tactics in order to grow or even stay in the position they are currently in.

Like any business you will upset customers from time to time. This will also result in negative word of mouth. Once a loyal customer, is now your worst enemy. In the last podcast I mentioned that negativity spreads much faster then positivity. It’s just the way humans are.

It’s for this reason you need to consistently think of new ways to expand your local reach and attract more of your local customers. I should also mention that social media marketing actually works really well along side word of mouth marketing.

Let met give you an example.

A new customer walks into your restaurant, and they have a brilliant evening. The service was great, the atmosphere was perfect and food was world class. They leave very happy and the following day they share their story to their friends. By doing so they have now planted a seed into the mind of your potential new customer.

Now, you might think your job is done?

Well, it’s not! You see in order for that seed to continue growing it will need water, food and nutrition. I hear you say; what am I talking about? How can you help that seed grow? You don’t even know these people.

This is where social media comes into play! Chances are that their friends are on one, if not all of the social media platforms you will be using to market your restaurant business. For example you can use Facebook Ads to target your local audience. With the seed already planted you can now help that seed grow by getting into the news feed of their friends. When they see your ad they will straight away have an emotional connection to your restaurant.

You are no longer a stranger to them. In their mind they will recall the conversation they had with their friend. Therefore, they are more likely to take action on your advert such as like your Facebook Page, share the ad with their friends and even comment on the ad.

By doing this simple marketing strategy you have now helped that seed mature into a plant. The next time they see your ad they will be 3 times more likely visit your restaurant. Marketing is a ongoing process and this marketing method has some of the best returns on investment.

If you think marketing is expensive let me ask you this question? How much is one loyal customer worth to your restaurant business over a lifetime? If you don’t know the answer to this question you really need to sit down and work it out. But I can assure you that the value of just one loyal customer is worth much more then the cost of a single Facebook Ad.

Social media is all about creating touches with your current and potential customers. The more touches you carry out the better results you will have. However, your marketing efforts will suffer if you don’t combine them with exceptional service and delicious food.

I can fill your restaurant but if you don’t deliver the customers will not return and you will have no return on your investment. This is a really important! You need to impress your customers once they get through your restaurant door. So, only promise on what you can deliver.

Social media is not all about paid advertising but it’s much harder to gain momentum by just using free marketing methods. Therefore, in order to get the best results for your restaurant you need to focus on both paid and free marketing strategies.

From my personal experience I have noticed that restaurants which are stagnated have one thing in common. Their social media following has not increased in numbers for a number of years. This tells me that they are not attracting new customers! As a result their turnover will stay at the similar level from previous years or even worse start to decline.

When the turnover starts to decline most restaurant owners will start to panic as they try to stop the ship from sinking. This is not the time to look at your marketing efforts! The time is now, and not tomorrow.

I hope you now understand the importance of using social media marketing to grow your restaurant business.
