Welcome to the tenth episode of Grow Your Business podcast brought to you by Manchester based WebProjectUK.com.
Thank you so much for taking time to listen to this podcast!
In today’s podcast I want share with you why your personal brand is so important to success of your business.
First, I would like to apologies for the poor sound quality of yesterdays podcast. I am experimenting with different microphones and systems so, it might take few days to get it perfect. So, please bare with us while we work on resolving the issues.
With that out of the way, let’s get started with today’s podcast.
So what is Personal Branding?
The easiest way to explain this is mentioning some big names. For example when I think of Apple I think of late Steve Jobs, I associate Bill Gates with Microsoft and Elon Musk with Telsa and Space X. I should also mention Richard Branson and Virgin.
All 3 have one thing in common. They are great story tellers and exceptional entrepreneurs. However, you and me probably don’t fall into the same category as these three. So, how do you apply these personal branding principles to you and your business.
When Bill Gates and Steve Jobs started working on their personal brands. It was much harder for them to achieve global domination. I say this because they didn’t access to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or YouTube.
Today it’s much easier to get in front of your targets audience with very little effort. Even if you don’t have a world class product or a massive marketing budget.
But why do you need a personal brand?
The personal brand is like the modern version of your paper based CV. The aim of your personal brand is to demonstrate your abilities, skills and create social proof. It’s important to note that we are all unique. Therefore, it’s important to tell the world what we can do to help others.
The aim of your personal brand is not to sell but to educate. The best way to sell is actually to never sell. If you provide the world with value then opportunities will find you.
For example if you have a compelling personal brand then people will find you desirable and interesting. This will result in grater online networking power. People will view your profiles, they will want find out more about you and connect with you.
Personal brand also works really well when networking in the real world. As your personal brand grows you will no longer be just another person in that room. People will start to recognise you and this will lead to less awkward conversations. You new power will entice people to do business with you at every level.
Another great benefit of personal branding is that you separate yourself from your business to some extent. This allows you to build your own network. This network is important to your personal and business success. As business owners we have all faced our ups and downs in business. In our world failure is not that uncommon.
If the failure of your business was to happen then you will have one asset which no one can take away from you. That is your personal brand network. This network will most likely follow you onto your next venture and help you succeed.
I should also add that personal branding is not all about building professional connections. You should also focus on making new friends. If you provide interesting content and people can easily find you then they will want to connect with you on a more personal level.
It’s all about emotional connections and we all have a story to tell. Our stories allow us to connect with other through our own similarities.
When you have a very attractive and entertaining personal brand good things will happen. For me personally my personal brand has landed me in a book along side 30+ UK′s leading experts including Duncan Bannatyne, Doug Richard and Deborah Meaden
This would have never happened without my personal brand.
As well as being written about, I have been featured in a number of different publications including Manchester Evening News, Daily Mail and various Angling magazines. I have also spoken in front of some of the biggest business leaders in Manchester.
But I am still hungry for more.
Once your personal brand starts to take shape so will your confidence. In business we all need confidence, as hard days can really push us into our shells. I am no stranger to this. When my Fishing Tackle business failed, I blamed myself. I felt like my whole world went under and it took me with it. It’s taken me a good number of years to find myself again, and start to publicly talk about what happened.
Thanks to the support of my network I have been able to rebuild part of my confidence and return back to the daily hustle.
To conclude if you are looking to grow your business in 2018 then you just can’t ignore your personal brand. Gaining acceptance as an expert is a great way to boost your bottom line. You will start to attract new business without becoming a sales rep.
Before, I close this podcast let me say this. If you are serious about growing your personal brand then start today! Don’t delay it until the next month, or next year. The internet world is moving at a lighting speed and you need to be part of that train. Today we still have room to expand our personal brands. However, in few years times this might no longer be the case. So, keep this in mind.
I will finish today’s podcast with the following quote: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” – if you know who said this please leave it in the comments below.
That is it for today.
