What are you going to learn today?

Today I am going to cover 10 social media tips to help you grow your small business online. The tips I am about to give you can be applied to both offline and online businesses.

Now before I go any further let me first explain why you need to focus more attention on social media marketing in 2017 and going forward.

Let me start with some statistics:

1. Facebook has over 2 billion active users.
2. Followed by YouTube with over 1 billion active users
3. In 3rd place is Instagram with 700 milion active users and growing.
4. In 4th place is twitter with 328 million active users.

I have only covered few of the most popular social media networks. We still have linkedin, snapchat, messanger, WhatsApp, Pinterest and so on.

Research carried out by Global Web Index shows that:

1. 37% of social media users said they follow their favourite brands on social media.
2. 30% of same users also said they use social media platforms to research products

The research was carried out in 2016 which you could say is slightly outdated today. I say this because social media platforms are consistently changing and the data I have just shared with you is most likely only to go up rather than down.

It’s without doubt that social media is the place to be seen if you are serious about growing your business.

Let’s look into this deeper and see what you can achieve on social media in order to grow your business online:

For me the most important aspect of social media is to increase your brand awareness. I say this because so many businesses today focus on selling their products via third party platforms such as Ebay, Amazon, Just4Eat, UberEat and this list is only about to get even bigger.

When you sell on such platforms it’s very hard to establish your own brand. Most businesses have too many eggs in one basket. When this basket crashes all the eggs go with it and so does your business.

Don’t let this happen to your business!

Therefore branding is very important to every business if you want to be around for a long time. Thankfully today keeping your brand message in front of your target customers is much easier then 10 plus years ago thanks to social media platforms.

Another great use of social media for your business is to learn more about your target customers.

For example – Few weeks ago I run a brand awareness Facebook campaign for one of our restaurant clients. As well as increasing their Facebook page likes, I was able to collect information on their ideal customers. The data provided to me by Facebook now allows me to create and execute even more targeted adverts. The potential is endless.

We live in the era of big data! Major brands are consistently using this data in order to understand their customer behaviours in more detail. By doing so they can provide targeted and more personalised marketing messages to their target audiences.

Once upon a time big data analysis was only done by big companies. However, today the data can be easily processed even by the smallest of companies. For example Facebook provides very detailed reports on your followers, Facebook campaigns and so on.

Let’s now move to communicating with our customers via social media.

I am not going to confuse you at this stage by talking about ‘Chatbots’ as this is the future of social media customer support. But it’s something to keep in mind for the future as you perfect your current social media marketing strategies.

Actually online communication with customers is kind of pain point for many businesses! The main reason behind this is because customers of today are more likely to go on social media to make a complaint then face to face or over the phone.

We can either spend the next 10 years complaining about it or just take it as it is and try to find a solution to this problem.

Hence why I push my clients to focus on social media communication! Keep in touch with your customers at all times, watch our for your brand mentions and when a negative feedback arrives deal with it in a professional manner.

However, by showing interacting with your customers via social media platforms you are less likely to face negative feedback. Customers want to be appreciated and social media platforms provide you with the easy opportunity to show your customers how much you appreciate their custom.

All the things I have mentioned so far are based around building relationships through communication, brand awareness and data analyses.

But how do you turn this into profit?

Well this is where your social media presence becomes very important. If you are using your social media correctly then it can help you increase sales.

First you need to build a loyal social media following that is actually interested in your brand or product. It’s this audience that is most likely to respond to your sales messages. This might sound complex but in fact it’s not if you apply the correct social media marketing strategies day in day out.

Building the audience might take time but – it’s this audience that will keep your business moving forward. Look after them and they will look after you!
As you can see the benefits of social media marketing is massive!
