In this podcast I am going to share with you my tips on how to use SMS to enhance your marketing message.
Before, I start with my tips let me give you some SMS statistics which I hope will inspire you to take my advice on board.
6.3 billion business SMS messages will be read within 3 minutes.
Now let me break this down into actions taken by consumers.
10% will book an appointment with your company.
9% would download your app
8% would go into your shop to make a purchase.
In 2017, 23.5 million people responded to a business text message.
The State of SMS company revealed that the average response rate to bulk SMS message was around 32%. You would be very lucky to achieve this type of response with any other marketing channel.
I am sure you will agree SMS should be part of your marketing strategy in 2018. Afterall, we just can’t put our phones down.
But where do you start with SMS marketing?
First, you need to collect mobile numbers from your potential or existing customers. I should add that you should never buy mobile phone numbers. This is not the way forward!
The best place to start is with a simple sign in your window or on your website. You could say something along these lines:
“To receive special offers from us just send a text to: 0777 457 779”
Now you can use your business mobile number and manually enter the numbers into your Bulk SMS software. However, this is only OK if you are getting few messages per day. But this would not work so well if you are getting 100s of new sign-ups.
Therefore, I have a solution for this as well.
You can sign up to a services is such as SMS marketing software offered by a company called Textburst. This is just one recommendations but you have many of them on the market at the moment. So, carry out your own research.
Once you sign up to this type of service you will be provided with a mobile number.
When your customer texts their details to that number the software will automatically add them to your SMS marketing list.
Another way to get more mobile numbers is by just ASKING!
If you have your own shop just ask everyone who comes in. You will be surprised how many mobile numbers you can collect in just one day.
The next step is to actually make use of these numbers in order to increase your revenue.
So, let’s dive into some of my favourite SMS marketing tactics.
My first tip is based around Incentives
We all love offers. So, tempt your customers with vouchers and special offers. Make them feel like they are part of your little secret club.
You need to keep your messages short. If you use Twitter on regular basis then you will know what I mean. This same principle can be applied to your SMS marketing campaigns. Make sure your text message is straight to the point, and has a clear call to action.
If you are new to marketing then this tip will be of great importance to you and your business. Not just for SMS marketing but for any other form of marketing. In marketing creating urgency will result in much faster response rates. For example you can have a expiry date for your offer. But it’s very important that you END the offer when you say you will! Otherwise your customers will not take your offers seriously and you will start to devalue your brand.
Make your SMS customers feel special. You could say something along these lines: “This deal is only valid for our VIP text customers” – every customers likes to feel special.
Timing of your SMS marketing campaign is very important. For example if majority of your customers are mums. You don’t want to be sending them your SMS marketing message at 8am in the morning. Why? Because they will more than likely be running around trying to get their kids ready for school and themselves for work. Therefore, interrupting them at this time could result in a negative response.
I don’t have a magic formula to answer this question for you. So, I suggest you try to understand your customers life styles and split test your campaigns in order to achieve the best results.
I think I have covered the most important SMS marketing tips.
